DC Studios Plans For "A Better Tomorrow"

It's 2013. Henry Cavill is about to make is debut as the newest actor to play Superman. Zack Snyder is about to start his idea for a multi-film storyline that will tell an epic tale. And Warner Bros Studios is about to start counting their money thinking they have a cinematic universe that will rival Marvel Studios at the box office. It's ten years later, and things didn't go as everyone hoped. Henry Cavill isn't playing Superman, Zack Snyder got fired before he could finish his plan, and Warner Bros has fumbled the DC characters to where, now, it's a brand that regular moviegoers no longer trust.

Enter film maker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran. They are the heads of the newly created DC Studios, a division of Warner Bros Studios, created by WB studio head, David Zaslav, in hopes of turning the DC Comic brand into something consumers will think positively of.  Tuesday, James Gunn announced the beginning stages of their plan in regard to the DC Universe moving forward.  A plan that will include theatrical films, HBO Max series, and animated projects.

This comes as a disappointment to some fans that still believe in the film universe Zack Snyder started, and still campaign for WB to "Restore the Snyderverse" even though I believe Zack Snyder's vision is the reason the DC characters are now held in such low esteem. Anyway, Gunn announced five films and five series that is just a sneak peak in what he has in store for the DCU, which includes some heavy hitters like Superman, Batman, and Green Lantern, but also leaves room for more fringe characters like Creature Commandos, The Authority, and Swamp Thing.

I liked Henry Cavill as Superman, even though I wasn't as warm on the films he played Superman in.  As my favorite superhero, I didn't agree with some of the story plots. I mean, you're doing the biggest event in comic book history, The Death of Superman, in your second film? In the words of Red Foreman, "Dumbass!"  Just the description of these first few projects makes it seem like Superman could be the lynchpin to the whole universe. Superman could be the beacon of light in a cynical world that has lost its hope, and that is what Superman should be, and what makes me believe that's what we're going to get.

One of the lesser-known titles announced, The Authority, is like a group we might compare to The Boys super team, The Seven. They are powerful, and get the job done, but they aren't nice about it. Their leaders, Apollo and Midnight, are comparable to Superman and Batman, but as I said, they aren't as nice, and they are lovers. I know The Authority, but not very well. I can very much see them being the catalyst of this universe, and its hopeless tone. But then Superman arrives, decides things need to change, and perhaps he starts to gather his own "super friends" to rival this gang of anti-heroes.

Included in the films set to release is a Swamp Thing film, and a Supergirl film based on a recent miniseries, Woman of Tomorrow, that I started to read and never finished. The miniseries has a less happy Kara Danvers than we are used too, which again feeds into the overall theme of this universe. But why not? This teenager saw all her friends and family die when Krypton exploded. That'd be a buzzkill to anyone. As for Swamp Thing, I've never been a big fan of the character, but I hope we get some cameos from other would-be Justice League Dark members to set-up that team.

And no, I did not forget about Batman. The final film planned is The Brave and the Bold, another storyline in this line-up based on the works of Grant Morrison. This film will see the first live-action appearance of Damian Wayne, Bruce Wayne's blood son, who was raised by The League of Assassins. So, as you can imagine, his morals may be a bit looser than his father's. Gunn promises something we've never seen in a Batman film to date, the appearance of the Bat Family, which hopefully includes appearances by Nightwing, Batgirl, Huntress, Batwoman, and many more.

Over on the TV side, we have the thing I'm least excited for, a Wonder Woman prequel, Paradise Lost, and also Creature Commandos, a titled I've heard of but never read. However, this seems right up James Gunn's alley as it even features a character he's put in one of his films, Weasel. A team full of monsters I believe can also be a tie-in with Swamp Thing.

Lanterns is a series that will feature the two most famous Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart.  It's said to take place on Earth and be like a True Detective show. Green Lanterns are space cops, but they patrol space. To me, the GL's(like Batman) is a section of the DCU that can stand on its own because of its deep mythology and many characters. To me, Green Lantern is an epic space opera. To widdle it down to a TV series makes me sad because of the budget restraints that will be placed on this show. However, knowing it is connected to feature films gives me hope that the scope of the GL's will expand as this universe of characters does.

Booster Gold is another fan favorite character that DC scholars have been hoping to see on a larger scale. The character is from the future but goes back in time with future tech to make himself seem like a superhero and get famous.  If you want the 411 on BG I recommend the comic series 52, or the Justice League Unlimited episode, The Greatest Story Never Told.

I saved the series Waller for last because I think it raises the most questions about the overall plan. The Flash is said to change the DC films, and I believe that was always its purpose. But I believed it was going to be a hard reboot with different actors. However, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom coming out after The Flash we still have Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Gunn also mentioned Waller including the Peacemaker cast. So, it doesn't seem like a hard reboot if we still have some of the same actors. Henry Cavill was a fan favorite. Why does he not get asked back if other actors are?  My best guess is twofold. 1) Superman is so essential to the new plan they wanted to make sure there was no comparison to the Snyderverse version of Superman to what the first film released will be. 2) We don't yet know all the pieces of this first chapter so, for now, we are left with questions that will just have to be answered later.

Overall, I like what was announced. I think there are a lot of safe choices, mixed with bold choices, to give everyone something to look forward to, and possibly make it distinguishable from Marvel. Of course, I have that fear that it could fail, but I trust James Gunn, and with the characters he has announced I can possible how they will fit into an overall story. Remember, Gunn worked very closely with Kevin Feige, and was almost handed a piece of the MCU kingdom as his own. But now he has been given his own kingdom to create.  And I wanna see what happens.

MY THOUGHTS ON DC STUDIOS POSSIBILITES

A few days ago, Jason Momoa walked out of Warner Bros Studios after taking a meeting with the new heads of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran. Momoa was gleefully excited, praising the duo and WB studio head, David Zaslav.  This was a different tone than we've seen recently from DC actors coming out of their Gunn and Safran meetings. Dwayne Johnson announced after his meeting with the studio duo they would not be moving forward with him as Black Adam at this time.  Before that, the Batgirl movie that was being made for HBO Max will not be released.  Zaslav supposedly feels the film wasn't good enough and would serve the studio better as a tax ride-off. Wonder Woman 3 is not moving forward, and Superman, Henry Cavill, is not coming back for another pass as the Man of Steel. All these things add up to the end of the DCEU that will finish with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in December.  But if Jason Momoa is no longer going to be the King of Atlantis, why is he so giddy?

Let me start off by saying I think Zach Snyder is decent director. But when he was picked to direct a Superman movie, I looked at his previous work and knew this was not the character for him. Warner Bros put him in charge of creating a cinematic universe to rival Marvel, but when the audience response didn't go how they wanted, or the box office numbers, they decided to play hopscotch with reworking The Suicide Squad and Justice League. By then, the damage was done.  In the eyes of general audiences DC's cinematic universe was less than Marvel's, despite having more heavy hitters like Superman and Batman. After years of trying to recover, and new leadership at WB, the DCU looks like it's about to get a fresh start. Zaslav's first priority was establishing its own studio for DC, much like Marvel had got years ago.  Then, putting two superhero movie veterans in charge of it, director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran. Safran has been helping make DC movies for Warner Bros the last few years, and James Gunn is a geek God with films like Slither, Guardians of the Galaxy, Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker.

So, what could these two have planned? James Gunn is very active on social media and has been talking about the importance of both Superman and Batman in their plans. We know they are looking for a younger actor than Henry Cavill to play a new Superman, in perhaps a Year 2 storyline like The Batman was.  We also know these plans involve Jason Momoa and his mile-wide grin. And we know that Gunn and Safran are meeting with The Batman director, Matt Reeves, and his plans for future related films.  Gunn has also stated that a few (not all) things they are planning will be announced by the end of January. With a little over a week to go, I think I'm part of the group that is drooling to find out what is to come.  But here are some of my ideas.

Superman. Clark Kent. Kal-El. The Man of Steel. The Last Son of Krypton. The Man of Tomorrow. The Big Blue Boy Scout.  I think WB and Zach Snyder were right to start their cinematic universe with a Superman movie.  He's the most important hero of them all. But what they failed to do was capture the hope and fun of the character.  The only time I saw Henry Cavill smile in those three films was when he was beating up Steppenwolf, or in a bathtub with Lois.  Superman is about inspiration. He doesn't want to lead; he wants us to strive for a better world.  Hope. That's what was missing from Zach Snyder's films, and that's what a Superman movie should be about. Hope. The first job I think Gunn and Safran are going to do is put the Big Blue Boy Scout back at the top of the DC food chain. Seeing Superman reveal himself to the world will not open the door for other heroes to step out into the light, but also draw enemies to Earth to face the challenge of the Last Son of Krypton.

Batman. Bruce Wayne. The Dark Knight. The Caped Crusader. I'll start off by saying, I love The Batman. And I think he has a big enough rogues gallery, and allies, to stay separate from the other DC characters. And that could be what they will do with Reeves Batverse, seeing how it's grounded in a world without super-powered aliens and mythical Gods.  But my fear is that Battinson will get the ax just like all the rest.  Of course, Batman will have to mix it up with the Justice League, but it won't be Robert Pattinson, and are we going to get two Batman character franchises running at the same time? I would like to see Reeves build on his version of The Caped Crusader, but I can see how it could end for the good of starting a new cinematic universe in the DCU.

Jason Momoa. Aquaman. The King of Atlantis.  At least he will be till the end of this year.  As an Aquaman enthusiast, I understood why Momoa was cast in the role years ago. He broke the stereotype of what Aquaman was perceived as.  I get it and I liked Aquaman.  But let me put it to you like this, if Cavill doesn't get to stay, nobody does.  I think the grin on Momoa's face after his DC meeting is because they gave him another part. A meatier, juicer, part. Lobo the space bounty hunter.  Google Lobo and tell me that doesn't look like Jason Momoa.  Watch any media with the character and tell that's not Jason Momoa.  He could be the perfect Lobo, and a linchpin in a new DC cinematic universe. My introduction to the character was in Superman: The Animated Series. In the episode, Lobo was hired to capture the Last Son of Krypton for an intergalactic collector, who collects rare things. I'd say the lone survivor of a dead world counts.  Lobo could come to Earth looking for a young Sups, then drag him out across the galaxy, thus opening Kal-El's eyes to all the beings and threats in the universe.  And Lobo is the exact kind of character James Gunn loves to play with.  If Gunn is writing a Superman movie, I'd say this kind of story may be something he'd write.

And if we step out into the galaxy, we're going to run into space cops, The Green Lantern Corps. Like Batman and his supporting characters, I think the GL's have enough for their own separate franchise. They are so diverse in their membership even if you just include the Earth Lanterns.  And don't get me started on the other color corps's. This mythology is ripe for the telling.

Kevin Feige once said that the stories of the Marvel characters already exist with decades of publishing.  He and his team just have to adapt them for the screen and the cinematic universe.  That's what Warner Bros has failed to do these last ten years. They need to find out why Superman, Batman, and the rest of the DC pantheon of characters have been imprinted onto fanboys for generations. Why do we love them, and what are their best stories that can be interpreted to reach a wider audience?  It's not an easy code to crack, and I do not envy the clean-up job Gunn and Safran have ahead of them.  But I'm cheering for them, not because I dislike what Zach Snyder did, but because I love these characters and I want more people to love them as I do. Now, everyone hold your breath, cross your fingers, and look, up in the sky.

5 Things I Want To See in 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'

Yes, I know.  It's been a LOOOOOOOOONG time since I have written an actual blog on Blogger.  I hopped on the podcast bandwagon and have been riding that engine ever since.  But I felt like a topic such as this one deserved my special touch.  So, I guess that means that from time to time you still may see me write an actual blog.  But don't hold your breath on it.
I am only a few hours away from watching a film most fanboys have wait years, if not their whole lives, to see.  Anyone who knows me, or heard me talk about Man of Steel, knows I had some major issues with it.  Though none of them had to do with their pick of Henry Cavill as Superman.  It's Zach Snyder's style I thought ruined the film, and ever since I heard he was not only continuing with Batman v Superman, but Justice League as well, I've been afraid of the entire DC Cinematic Universe expansion.  I loved the casting of Ben Affleck and Jeremy Irons as Batman and Alfred.  I hated the casting of Jesse Eisenberg and Gal Gadot as Lex Luthor and Wonder Woman.  I want to like this movie.  I'm trying my best to walk into it with hope and an open mind.  But even today, as I see bad headlines online, I am preparing for the worst.
While not a fan of the previous film it was not without merit.  Like I said, I liked Henry Cavill as Clark Kent, I liked Amy Adams and Laurence Fishburne as Lois Lane and Perry White.  And I loved the visual effects.  Seeing Superman and Zod fight, while very unnecessary, was cool to watch.  So in order to correct this ship that Man of Steel has launched I've thought of 5 things I'd like to see in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to get me on board with the DCCU moving forward.

1)  Superman must feel bad about killing Zod
I get that Superman kills every once and a while.  I've read enough comics to know he avoids it at all costs, but sometimes, it happens.  My main gripe with him snapping Zod's neck in MoS was tat it was the first Superman film of the reboot.  The audience didn't even get one film to establish his rule on not killing.  In Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy the first two entire films established that Batman went out of his way not to kill because it separates him from his enemies.  Is Snyder and writer David Goyer saying Superman has no quarrel with it?
I want Clark to draw the line in this film.  I want him to have thought about his actions and realized that Zod is the last life he'll ever take.  Jor-El sent Kal-El to Earth to "give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards".  Right now, Clark is down in the mud with the rest of us.  That isn't Superman.  Like Captain America, he is supposed to show us that the right thing to do is usually the hardest choice.

2)  Keep Doomsday's screen time minimal
When I saw that Lex was going to turn Zod's corpse into the villain known as Doomsday I was horrified.  And not by Doomsday's appearance.  It was that they took this iconic, powerful, villain and put him in the 2nd film of this cinematic universe.  Marvel has been teasing Thanos for 6 films!  In the comics, Doomsday took out the entire Justice League before killing Superman.  Now, it appears that a rookie Superman and Wonder Woman, along with Batman, can handle this force of nature.  Um.....no.
However, if Doomsday shows up at the end of this film, and the Trinity realizes they can't take down this beast alone, so then they form the Justice League to help them.  I'd be on board with that.  If you're going to waste a good villain like Zod in the first Superman film, and then double tap that bad decision by turning him into Doomsday, at least make it worth our while.

3)  Show me Darkseid
We've all seen the parademons and the Omega symbol in the Batman v Superman trailer.  So we can all guess that Darkseid will be the big bad guy in the Justice League film.  In the mid-credit scene for The Avengers we got our first glimpse of Thanos and had non-comic readers saying, "Isn't that Red Skull?"  I want a tease like that.  I've seen parademons; show me the big guy.  Show me the ultimate galactic villain that Warner Bros and DC thought it would be ok to have in the 5th film of their cinematic universe(Marvel is at 13 and still not fought Thanos).  I just wanna know what he looks like.  I figure the Justice League film will loosely be based on Geoff Johns New 52 storyline; Origin.  Or if you want to check out the animated film, Justice League: War to get an idea what the live-action film may be like, it's also based in Origin.

4)  Lois supporting Clark
In several storylines we see that Lois is Superman's anchor to humanity.  I will also give some credit to Ma and Pa Kent.  Clark is a being who is so powerful he can take over the world; possibly the galaxy.  But his human emotions, like love, are what keep him humble.  Without them, he'd really think he was a god.  Governments and vigilantes are coming after Clark for the destruction of Metropolis.  He will feel ashamed.  He will feel like his mission is not worth it.  Lois has to be there to support him.  To know that world needs someone like him to give them hope.  And Lois needs to be there for him so that he doesn't have to be "Superman" all the time.  I love that Lois knows who Clark is right from that start.  So let's not waste it.

5)  Don't screw up Wonder Woman!!!!!
Ben Affleck has proven himself in recent years to be not only an accomplished actor, but a great film maker as well.  I have no worries that he will make a good Batman.  But giving the most iconic female superhero character in history to a model who is trying to start an acting career?  What were they thinking!!!!!
Granted, I have been trying to hold off judgement on Gal Gadot until I see the film, but I have been VERY scared of this casting choice since the beginning.  The only thing I've seen Gadot in is the Fast & Furious films and I was not impressed at all.  Rumor has it WW isn't in the film enough to make or break it, but with her own solo film coming out next year I feel like the entire female superhero film sub-genre is on Gal Gadot's shoulders.  And those shoulders look like they can barely lift a lasso.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Will Sneak Up And Surprise You

With mega blockbusters coming out this year like Avengers: Age of Ultron and Star Wars: The Force Awakens still to come we seem to forget that 2015 is the year of spies.  Kingsmen: The Secret Service seemed to please everyone, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation is doing very well, and the next James Bond film, Spectre, is set to come out this Fall. However, this weekend we get a spy film I haven't seen in a while; the classic sixties spy adventure.
Based on the 1960's television series, Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer are agents Solo and Illya.  Both from opposite sides of the Cold War, and both despise the other.  However, when nuclear war is set to erupt from an unknown party the American and Russian agents must team up to bring down the bad guy.  Along for the ride is actress Alicia Vikander; best known for her part in Ex Machina.
The chemistry between Cavill and Hammer was quite a delight in the film but to me the one who shined brighter was Cavill.  The current Man of Steel played the James Bond stereotype perfectly.  He was a spy who was good with the ladies, good with the jokes, and had quite the light touch when it comes to robbing the bad guys.  Maybe it's because the CIA recruited him out prison after becoming a world renown thief.  On the other hand, Hammer's character has a quick temper, which is a constant character flaw that gets him in trouble throughout the film.  The only other notable actor in this movie is Hugh Grant from British Intelligence; but sadly isn't in enough of the film.
Director Guy Ritchie's style I think works perfectly with this genre film.  The characters were sharp and so was the dialogue.  Some of the plot may have been predictable, but I haven't smiled so much in a theater since I saw that Avengers round shot a few months back.  Another lackluster part of the film was the relationship between Hammer and Vikander's characters.  Their semi-romance just didn't seem to work for me because I couldn't understand why these two people would be attracted to each other given their personalities.
But, there is still plenty to like in this film.  As I was walking out I kept humming songs from the movie. I think because the music had such an impact in each scene.  For example, Solo just sits in a truck and eats a sandwich, while listening to the radio, as Illya is having a dog fight with some bad guys on boats.  It was really funny.  And as a guy who also sells suits for a living I also loved the wardrobe.  Not just the sweet 3-button suits Cavill wore, but also the fun sixties dresses Vikander was in.
I will also give Ritchie some credit on the run time.  Some movies these days seem to drag out and go on too long, but as the film reached it's climax Ritchie did a mulit-split screen action sequence that could have lasted ten minutes, but was over in less than three.  It helped speed things along to get back to the plot and characters of the film, and kept the film under two hours.  Besides, once you've seen one cliche spy movie shoot out you've seen them all.
I really think this film has something for everyone(over the age of 13) and I would definitely recommend it over any film that has come out within the last month.  Although, I have not seen Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation but I saw the previous two, and it's all the same at this point.  If you don't believe me just ask Honest Trailers.
When is comes down to it this movie did several things for me.  It helped convince me Henry Cavill can play more than just Superman, Guy Ritchie is starting to become of my favorite directors, and reminded me how good classic spy movies were.  These days people just make an action movie with some government agents and call it a spy movie.  When was the last time Tom Cruise seduced the female villain just for kicks?  Or when did Daniel Craig walk into a room and immediately charm everyone into liking him?  This is old school, Sean Connery, spying my friends with a lot of laughs.
By the end of the film it's all set up for "the team" to do a sequel and I am itching for more.   I think Cavill found another franchise for him to continue besides the DCCU, and Hammer has found a role he hasn't sucked at in quite a few years.  Now I just have to convince my wife to give this film a try so I can see it again, because this was last on my schedule of summer movies.  Now give me Star Wars!

WB's DC Characters Look To Out-Plan Marvel

In the race of comic book films Marvel is so far ahead of DC they've pretty much lapped them; twice.  However, this week's announcement by Warner Bros could improve their chances to catch up.  WB/DC took the wind out of the sails of the Avengers sequel when they appeared at the San Diego Comic Con with a Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice teaser, a picture of what Wonder Woman will look like, and their three main stars making a brief appearance.  Now they've upstaged Marvel again. Just days after Variety reported Robert Downey Jr appearing in the third Captain America film, Warner Bros CEO Kevin Tsujihara came out to announce some upcoming projects such as several LEGO films, three Harry Potter spin-off films, and a ten-film slate for their DC Comic characters.
After Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros will come out with two films a year, starting with a stand-alone Wonder Woman film starring Gal Gadot along with one of two Justice League films.  Also on the schedule is a Green Lantern reboot film, a stand-alone Cyborg film, and an Aquaman film starring the long-rumored Jason Momoa.  But even before we get Wonder Woman we'll get Suicide Squad, based on the comic about a bunch of super villains who are forced to do good.
This is a very ambitious line-up WB has planned, but it also says to Marvel Studios, and the rest of the world, "we're all in."  I wasn't the biggest fan of Man of Steel, but the things I liked about it, such as Henry Cavill and Amy Adams performances, will carry on throughout the other DC films.
The film announcement that shocked me the least was the Green Lantern reboot.  After the poorly received Ryan Reynolds film failed to jump start the DC film universe I still believed it had potential to be a part of this grand plan.  But it looks like Warner Bros is just wiping the chalkboard clean and starting from scratch. Chances are by the time we see the GL film we'll already have an impression as to whether we like this character or not.  Odds are as well that it'll be Hal Jordan taking center stage just like the previous film.  But with several other human Green Lantern's to choose from I wouldn't be surprised if they go with John Stewart or even Guy Gardner.
The two films that shocked me the most were the announcements of a Cyborg and Flash film.  Given that Flash is arguably the fourth most popular DC character I'm not shocked he's getting his own film; just shocked that they've already cast Ezra Miller as the Scarlet Speedster.  I like The Perks of Being A Wallflower star, and I could see him being a good Bart Allen or young Wally West. But as Barry Allen, I'm not so sure.  Plus Barry Allen's story is already being told in a new series on The CW that is off to a good start in my opinion.
Meanwhile the stand-alone Cyborg film confused me.  Cyborg is great character, but he's always been a supporting character and never had his own ongoing comic.  I'd much rather see him in a Teen Titans film, where the character really got his start. As far as the solo Aquaman movie starring Jason Momoa? We all saw that coming after months of speculation.
The most ambitious move by WB/DC will be the Wonder Woman film.  She's thee iconic super heroine in the world, and after much talk about Marvel being the first to release a female-led film Warner Bros announces one first.  This of course is all resting on Gal Gadot's ability to pull of this classic comic book character.  I think I speak for everyone when I say, we are praying Gadot has more talent than she showed us in the Fast & Furious franchise.
It's a bold move for Warner Bros to announce all these films before we've even seen The Dark Knight Returns...I mean...Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.  This all lyes on that film being good.  And just because I haven't agreed how Zach Snyder and Warner Bros have treated the DC characters so far doesn't mean I'm not rooting for them.  I'm in their fan section with a big foam finger attached to me.
I honestly could write about this subject until I fall asleep on my keyboard.  I didn't even get into the Shazam film starring Dwayne Johnson, or the absence of Green Arrow.  With Marvel and DC about to unleash a buffet of films into the world I think I speak for comic book fanboys everywhere when I quote Seth Cohen, "We're not outcast anymore. We're trailblazers."

DC's Potential Cinematic Disaster

A few weeks ago a rumor was leaked online as to the release dates of Warner Bros/DC Comics cinematic universe.  This is just speculation for now, though this was suppose be announced at next month's San Diego Comic Con.  In any event, this rumor has sent geeks everywhere in an uproar.  Every fan boy has their opinion about this news, and this fan boy is no different.
Marvel Studios has been kicking DC's ass in the movie making competition with each film getting better and better.  Meanwhile, DC has only mustered up Man of Steel after Green Lantern wasn't good enough to kick-start to their DC cinematic universe.  If this announcement is real then Warner Bros wants to pump out seven films in almost three years.  Marvel Studios has been putting out two films a year, adding to the Spider-Man and X-Men films Fox and Sony are putting out sporadically.  This whole schedule seems like Warner Bros is trying to overcompensate for them running behind in the race.  But not only is this rushed, but also, bad ideas!  Here's why:

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (May 2016)
Anyone who knows me knows I have serious issues with Man of Steel.  However, I do believe it does have some redeeming qualities that could carry over well to a sequel.  But of course we will never know, at least not for a while, because this is not the MoS sequel we thought we were getting.
When Ben Affleck was added as Batman we thought he would just make a decent cameo, but felt the focus was still going to be on the Last Son of Krypton.  Then Gal Gabot was cast as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Jason Momoa as Aquaman; allegedly.  This whole film started to sound like just a set-up for a Justice League movie.  Then the title came out.  Dawn of Justice confirms it is just a set-up for a Justice League movie and that it's officially not a MoS sequel.
This disturbs me.  Warner Bros couldn't go two films without their cash-cowing Dark Knight, and to me that says that they have no faith in any other DC property; no even Superman.  But the problem isn't the characters, it's who's behind the properties.  But I'll get to that.

Shazam (July 2016)
Out of all the rumored upcoming DC movies this is the one I have the most faith in.  Shazam is better known as Captain Marvel.  Little Billy Batson gains the powers of a god by saying "shazam" and becoming a superhero who rivals even Superman.  I think this film will work because it's a little boy who becomes a superhero.  What kid won't want to see this film?  However, Shazam can not be another sad and destructive Man of Steel.  For this film to work it has to be more Hook and less Passion of the Christ.  This is a story of a kid and it needs to target kids for it to work.  Any Disney executive knows if you make a kid movie then you get twice the ticket money because the parent has to take the kids to see the movie!
The ol' Zach Snyder style won't get it done on this one.  But with Warner's faith in the Goyer/Snyder duo I'm a little worried.  However, I'll hold off judgement until I see who they'll get to direct.  I'd just better not see Quentin Tarantino's name on the short list.

The Sandman (Christmas 2016)
The only thing known about this film so far is that Joseph-Gordon Levitt is set to star.  I'm not too familiar with this DC/Veritgo property except that I know it's the farthest thing from a Justice League tie-in.  It has to do with dreams, reality, and a lot of other trippy things that will be a nice break from the superheroes Warner Bros will be ramming down our throats for the next few years.

Justice League (May 2017)
It took Marvel Studios five films and four years to get to The Avengers.  Warner Bros is looking to get to Justice League with two films in four years.  This is a HUGE mistake!  No disrespect to Black Widow and Hawkeye but the Justice League has much better characters than just Batman and Superman.  You can't introduced Green Lantern, Flash, and Aquaman in a team film.  They all have complex and deep origin stories that deserve their own film first.  Granted, Hal Jordan has had his own film, but we all know Ryan Reynolds has about as much to do with Justice League as Eric Bana has to do with The Avengers.  Without knowing their origins this film will fall apart; especially since we know the film will just be about Batman and Superman. Well, just about Batman anyway.

Wonder Woman (July 2017)
I love Gal Gadot.  I loved her when she starred in....ummm.  Then she was great when she won an award for....ummmm.  Well, she had more than ten lines in....ummm.  The point I'm trying to make is that Gadot hasn't proven herself as an actress in ANYTHING.  The only thing I've seen her in is the Fast and Furious films and even then I was unimpressed.  Wonder Woman is one of the most iconic female characters in fiction history.  Her portrayal on screen has to be iconic.
Gal Gadot has not shown me, and many others, that she is worthy of carrying the Wonder Woman mantle.  We have yet to see her play Diana in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.  Given Warner Bros rumored schedule a Wonder Woman movie will be already in the production when audiences first see Gadot appear in Dawn of Justice.  If she is bad then the Wonder Woman movie could be put on ice and not see the light of day for many, many years.  Plus I feel that it could possibly ruin the entire DC cinematic universe.
Now don't get me wrong.  I really want Gadot to be good.  I am rooting for her to be good.  But I have yet to see anything that would show me she'll be good.  I hate to say this, but the future of movies based on DC Comics(except Batman) may hang in the balance with Gadot and Wonder Woman.

Flash and Green Lantern team-up (Christmas 2017)
As much as I've griped about the other possible film this one has me the most worried.  Now, these two characters do go together.  They even had their own comic book; The Brave and the Bold. Hal Jordan and Barry Allen are good friends, so it would make sense that they'd have their own buddy-cop movie.  But we don't know that we're getting Hal Jordan and Barry Allen.  Warner Bros is trying to wipe away any stink of Green Lantern, which may include not having Hal Jordan as GL, but maybe the popular John Stewart instead.  Meanwhile, Barry Allen is already going to be the Flash in an upcoming television show on The CW.  Do you think they're really going to have one Barry on TV and one on the big screen?  They might as well go with Wally West as the Flash.
If course in changing who will be the new GL and Scarlet Speedster you've changed the relationship.  John and Wally have nothing to do with each other except that they're both Justice League members. No matter what characters they choose these two heroes are way to important to not get their own film; regardless of who is in the costume.

Man of Steel 2 (May 2018)
So after all the other films, and five years after the original MoS came out, they're finally going to get to a sequel?  I can't decide if I'm disappointed or kind of OK with that.  Man of Steel was a let-down for me so I'm in no rush to see a sequel.  However I'm also of the mind set that Superman should have gotten his due sequel before Justice League.  Iron Man, the character who started the Marvel cinematic universe, got two films in before The Avengers.  Why can't Superman?  I actually like Henry Cavill and am interested in seeing more of his performance as Clark Kent.
With Zach Snyder directing Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice AND Justice League I wonder if he'll come back to do the Man of Steel sequel?  I hope not. Snyder's vision was main part of what was wrong with Man of Steel in my opinion and after several recent comments writer David Goyer made about a certain Martian I'm not sure I want him writing for the Man of Tomorrow either; or any DC property.  As a long-time Superman reader I was worried from Snyder right out of the gate, and i feel like I was right.  Superman is about hope, and Man of Steel had none.  And as of right now I don't see any for this DC cinematic universe.
But don't get the wrong idea.  They'll still get my $10 with every film and a little voice inside me saying, "please be good, please be good, please be good."  I'm just surprised that a Batman film isn't in this slate.  But I'm sure we'll find out next month in San Diego when Warner Bros confirms or denies this potential cinematic disaster.

The Man Without Fear is The Dark Knight?

So the decision has been made people.  The contest that has raged on for the last few months has finally ended, and a Hollywood star has come out on top.  Ben Affleck has been chosen to play Batman/Bruce Wayne in the next film adaptation of the character in Batman vs. Superman.  The film will be a sequel to this year’s Man of Steel and have actor Henry Cavill returning as the Last Son of Krypton.  Zach Snyder will also return to direct.  Social media has been a buzz and everyone has their opinion about this casting choice.  I’m more worried about the film itself.
A while ago I wrote a blog about the rollercoaster ride that is Ben Affleck’s career.  He started out winning an Oscar for Best Screenplay with his friend, Matt Damon.  Then we went on to do films that critics didn’t seem to enjoy like Reindeer Games, Pearl Harbor, and playing the Marvel character Daredevil.  Reindeer Games was mind-numbing entertainment and I liked Pearl Harbor, but anyone who criticizes Daredevil has only seen the theatrical cut.  Watch the director’s cut. I have it on blu-ray and totally redeems itself.  Affleck slowly rose from the ashes and ended up winning an Oscar again this year for directing the film Argo.

That last part seems the most curious for me about Affleck’s agreement to play the Dark Knight.  He’s just now making name for himself as an accomplished director in Hollywood, so why would he play a superhero, possibly for the next few years?  That leads me to the second half of my worry.  I know Snyder and Warner Bros. were looking for an older, more seasoned Batman, similar to The Dark Knight Returns Batman, but didn’t they even think about the franchise?  When Marvel Studios signed Chris Evans to play Captain America he signed up for 3 Captain America films and 3 Avengers films, which will take up almost 10 years of his life.  I don’t think Affleck as made the same commitment, like Warner Bros. should have been looking for in an actor. They need an actor who will be Batman for the next decade, and play him in the upcoming Justice League movies Warner Bros. has planned. Of course I don’t believe Batman and Superman belong in a Justice League movie, at least not the first one.  But that’s a totally separate ramble for another time.
To me this announcement isn’t about Ben Affleck’s acting abilities.  I have always thought Affleck was a good actor and I think he’ll make a good Batman/Bruce Wayne, but about Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment not thinking long-term like their rival, Marvel Studios. Warner Bros. is trying to do what Marvel has done and make their own DC movie universe, but they’re f%cking it up!  They’re going for star power and thinking about each film, not how it will all flow together in the grander design.  They need an actor that is willing to make the signature of his career, and life, on being Batman.  That isn’t Affleck, at least not at this point in his career.  If DC and Warner Bros. was smart they’d take this older Batman idea and then turn it into a Batman Beyond movie; which they won’t.
Of course I had worries about this film long before yesterday’s announcement.  I’ve read quite a few Batman comics books in my day, but would never call myself a big fan of Batman.  Anyone who knows me knows I’m a big Superman fan, and if Man of Steel is the starting point for Batman vs. Superman then it’s in trouble from the starting block.  I did like Henry Cavill has the new Man of Tomorrow but I did not like Zach Snyder and David Goyer’s interpretation of the character. I  felt like they dragged Superman down in the dirt to satisfy a modern audience instead of making him the light in the darkness we should all aspire too be.
Affleck will now join the prestigious ranks of Ryan Reynolds and the late Michael Duncan Clarke who will have played both a DC and Marvel character on the big screen. So to kind of summarize this whole ramble, I think Ben Affleck will make a great Batman, but for the film and the future of the character on the big screen I don’t believe this is the right choice.  Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to have a Ben Affleck marathon.  I just can’t decide between Armageddon or Jersey Girl?
